| Summary: | ENG- Tourism governance is a multifaceted subject, and emerging destinations have distinct needs compared to mature destinations. They must consider different elements than those that have already undergone the development of public policies. The new characteristics arise from profound transformations brought by factors including but not limited to the technological revolution, advancements in information technologies, growing social complexity, and heightened competitiveness. Hence, the governance models designed years ago, while still in effect, may not all be suited to the present context, and some may be outdated. To effectively manage destinations, particularly emerging ones, is believed to have a thorough analysis of governance characteristics, its components, and a contemporary perspective, considering all the changes that have occurred in recent years. This viewpoint rises from the concept of a tourist destination, where it is seen as an area wherein all stakeholders play a role in the tourism process. To address this, the initial step involved a comprehensive review of literature on four main subjects: tourist destinations, destination management, governance, and emerging destinations. Additionally, two distinctly different practical cases were selected for analysis: Ecuador and China. After scrutinizing both theory and practice, six fundamental continuums or categories were identified for tourism governance in emerging destinations: government, tourism development, residents, management, marketing, and DMO. And with this, a systematic search was conducted using Atlas. IT software, allowing the analysis of nearly 500 scientific articles and the establishment of a robust conceptual foundation incorporating perspectives from various angles and multiple authors. Consequently, during the discussion, the six components are compared—initially, one emerging destination against another, followed by a juxtaposition of theoretical assertions with the practical findings |
