description This work evaluates the influence of the relative position of electrodes and the use of surfactants on the mobility of chlorinated hydrocarbons in real silts undergoing the application of electric fields. It is concluded that, opposite to what it could be expected according to results obtained in previous scientific works in which spiked soil is used, the drag of organic pollutants by the electroosmotic flux is negligible, as well as the transport through the soil of organics associated with other electrokinetic processes, because the amount of pollutant collected in the electrolyte wells is lower than 1% after the application of electric field for a fortnight. This means that ageing of soil contributes to make stronger the interaction of soil and pollutants. Pollution of soil does not influence the transport of water by electroosmosis and salts by electromigration because no differences are found in the three tests in which the relative position of the polluted soil and electrodes is changed. As well, the amount of pollutants collected in a granular activated carbon trap that is placed at the outlet of the gas flow is also very low, although mass balance and condensation of liquid in the walls of the mockup indicate that the grasshopper effect is very important. Dichlorination is found to be the most important process, because it is observed in all tests. This dichlorination contributes to improve volatility of the pollutants, and it is improved when using anodes of iron as compared to glassy carbon and when SDS surfactant is added to soil. Results are of a great significance because they show that electrokinetic does not behave in the same way in real and synthetic spiked soils and shed light on the influence of the key parameters on the process, despite the small testing devices used.
