Sumario:Páramo is an ecosystem that provides environmental services to Ecuadorians but is limited. It is a reservoir of unique species that have developed adaptations for abrupt changes from abiotic factors that occur daily. For these reasons, it must be given the importance to conserve them. A comparison of floristic composition, in different altitudinal ranges, was carried out in the tussock páramo ecosystem in Paluguillo Water Conservation Reserve, 45 km from the city of Quito. A total of 36 plots of 2 x 2.5 m2 were established randomly in three altitudinal ranges that were named (Lower Zone: 3660 to 3760 masl, Medium Zone: 3830 to 3930 masl, and Higher Zone: 3990 to 4090 masl) with two vegetation treatments (herbaceous and shrub). Data were collected on abiotic factors such as temperature, solar radiation, soil humidity, and humidity, pH, and temperature; and biotic factors such as number of individuals, species, gender and family. As a result, differences in floristic composition were found between treatments, altitudinal range, and between zones. This study may be used in management and conservation natural resource programs for páramos with similar abiotic and biotic characteristics, and for long term research.
