| Resumo: | This article aims to analyze the implementation of the Fair Trade Town in Poços de Caldas, Brazil, in order to identify what are the main challenges in stimulating domestic consumption of Fair Trade products in a producing country. For this, the paper is organized into three parts: (i) emphasizes the recent insertion of Brazil in Fair Trade, (ii) discusses the implementation of the Fair Trade Town in Poços de Caldas, (iii) and presents some data, collected in interviews with local consumers, on the knowledge and consumption of Fair Trade products. Generally, the low-income of large portion of the population and the sharp social inequality are important limiting the spread of the consumption of Fair Trade products in developing countries like Brazil. However, cities like Poços de Caldas with strong tourist appeal and above the Brazilian average social indicators have great potential for this market growth. Nevertheless, the survey data shows that knowledge about the movement is still low, which requires greater public awareness campaign and dissemination of its principles. |
