The radiative propertiesof plant canopies and light refl ection from healthy andstressed crops are described briefl y. Possible applications ofGreenSeeker in diagnosis and correction of crop disordersin the fi eld in real time are considered, according to spatialheterogeneity ubiquitous in tropical agro ecosystems. Thelimitations of the technology currently available and itsapplications to other tropical crops, besides rice and corn,are also addressed.El objetivo de este trabajo es proveerlos conocimientos básicos y los principios técnicos necesariospara el uso correcto del GreenSeeker™ en aplicacionesagrícolas como la fertilización nitrogenada, la dosifi cacióndel riego, el mapeo de los campos agrícolas y la agriculturade precisión. Se describe el instrumento y las bases físicas yfi siológicas que respaldan su uso en la agricultura, ademásde las propiedades radiativas de las superfi cies vegetales, yla refl exión de la luz en cultivos sanos y vigorosos comparadoscon plantas estresadas. Se discuten las posibles aplicacionesdel GreenSeeker en el diagnóstico y la corrección dediversos tipos de estrés y otros “desórdenes” experimentadospor los cultivos en el campo, en tiempo real, y acorde con laheterogeneidad espacial siempre presente de los agroecosistemastropicales.
