This movement reached its peak in 1896, with the Tagalog insurrection and the definitive break away from Spain in 1898.En el último tercio del siglo XIX el Pacífico español se había convertido en un incontrolable polvorín. Diversas cuestiones no resueltas y agravadas con el paso del tiempo, confluyeron en la misma trayectoria y los maltrechos cimientos de una agotada metrópoli se vinieron abajo mediante una insurrección.
