description This study presents the influence in terms of fecal contamination indicators that the effluent from the Los Tajos Wastewater Treatment Plant (Los Tajos WWTP) has on the Torres River bed and the mouth of the Virilla-Tárcoles basin. The simples were taken in foir points,; the first 200 meters before the effluent of the Los Tajos WWTP, the second in the effluent of the Los Tajos WWTP, the third 200 meters after the effluent of the Los Tajos WWTP and the fourth located under the Tárcoles River bridge, 600 meters from the mouth of the river of the same name. Sampling was carried out to determine the most probable number of thermotolerant (fecal) coliforms and E. coli from the years 2017-2018, with the purpose of knowing the impact of fecal contamination caused by the Los Tajos WWTP effluent and then using it in accordance with the annual flows of raw water to be treated in the years from 2017 to 2025. The results of the estimates indicate that, by increasing the flow of raw water per year, in 2025 with a flow of 2065.64 l/s, the contamination fecal flow from the mouth of the Virilla-Tárcoles Basin will go from 9,400 CF/100 mL in 2016 to 254,656 CF/100 mL in 2025. However, it is important to note that the estimates of the increase in flow are not in reality increased as projected for the years from 2019 to 2023. However, it is always necessary to advance the construction of the second stage of the Los Tajos WWTP with the development and operation of biological or secondary treatment, in order to remove instead of 40 % of the organic matter in the raw waters to 70%, which will mitigate the contamination of the streams of the aforementioned Virilla-Tárcoles Basin.
