description Introduction: Research regarding metabolic equivalents and energy expenditure in high-intensity functional training sessions is scarce despite the popularity of this fitness modality. Objective: To analyze metabolic equivalents and energy expenditure in a high-intensity functional training session in physically active subjects. Methodology: Descriptive study of quantitative approach with a sample at convenience of 14 men (age 23,21±2,26 years; body mass 70,52±10,61 kg; height 1,75±0,06 m) and 7 women (age 23,60±1,67 years; body mass 57,76±10,38 kg; height 1,58±0,06 m) physically active. They performed the WOD Karen (150 wall balls) and the heart rate was recorded every 30 repetitions through the H7 heart rate monitors. Metabolic equivalents were determined with respect to maximum heart rate (HRmax) and maximal oxygen consumption data obtained in a field test, while energy expenditure was estimated from a predictive equation. Statistical analysis was carried out in the statistical package PSPP (95% confidence and a p-value of 0,05). Results: Men obtained 12,96±1,18 MET and women 12,17±0,93 MET, the energy expenditure of men was 73,92±7,54 kJ.min-1 and in women 51,89±3,15 kJ.min-1. Conclusion: A high-intensity functional training session presents submaximal to maximal values in physically active subjects.

Objetivo: Analizar los equivalentes metabólicos y gasto energético en una sesión de entrenamiento funcional de alta intensidad en sujetos físicamente activos. Metodología: Estudio descriptivo de enfoque cuantitativo con una muestra a conveniencia de 14 hombres (edad 23,21±2,26 años; masa corporal 70,52±10,61 kg; talla 1,75±0,06 m) y 7 mujeres (edad 23,60±1,67 años; masa corporal 57,76±10,38 kg; talla 1,58±0,06 m) físicamente activos. Estos realizaron el WOD Karen (150 lanzamientos de balón medicinal a pared) y se registro cada 30 repeticiones la frecuencia cardiaca a través de los pulsómetros H7. Los equivalentes metabólicos fueron determinados con respecto a los datos de frecuencia cardiaca máxima (FCmáx) y consumo máximo de oxigeno obtenidos en una prueba de campo, mientras que el gasto energético fue estimado a partir de una ecuación predictiva. El análisis estadístico se llevó a cabo en el paquete estadístico PSPP (95% de confianza y un p-valor de 0,05). Resultados: Los hombres obtuvieron 12,96±1,18 MET y las mujeres 12,17±0,93 MET, el gasto energético de los hombres fue de 73,92±7,54 kJ.min-1 y en las mujeres de 51,89±3,15 kJ.min-1. Conclusión: Una sesión de entrenamiento funcional de alta intensidad presenta valores submaximales a maximales en sujetos físicamente activos.Introdução: Pesquisas sobre Equivalentes Metabólicos (EM) e Gasto Energético (GE) em sessões de Treinamento Funcional de Alta Intensidade (HIFT) têm demonstrado efeitos positivos em diferentes populações. Objetivo: Analisar EM e GE em indivíduos Fisicamente Ativos (FA) durante uma sessão de HIFT. Metodologia: Estudo descritivo, abordagem quantitativa, com amostra por conveniência de 14 homens (idade 23,21±2,26 anos; massa corporal 70,52±10,61 kg; altura 1,75±0,06 m) e 7 mulheres (idade 23,60±1,67 anos; massa corporal 57,76±10,38 kg; altura 1,58±0,06 m), todos FA. Realizou-se o WOD Karen (150 arremessos de medicine ball no menor tempo possível) com registro da frequência cardíaca. O EM foi determinado com dados da frequência cardíaca máxima (FCmáx) por meio de monitores H7 e consumo máximo de oxigênio obtido em um teste de campo; o GE foi estimado por uma equação preditiva. A análise estatística foi realizada no pacote estatístico PSPP (95 % de confiança e valor de p de 0,05). Resultados: O EM foi semelhante entre os sexos (homens 12,96 ± 1,18 MET vs. mulheres 12,17 ± 0,93 MET), e o GE foi maior nos homens (73,92±7,54 kJ.min-1 vs. 51,89±3,15 kJ.min-1).
