The future of a sustainable electricity sector points towards the integration of smart grid, distributed generation, high penetration of non-conventional renewable energies, and energy efficient technologies. This article advocates for demand side management as the core of a public policy with a long-term vision that supports and integrates the strategies previously mentioned. The article recognizes the vulnerability of the Costa Rican national electricity system, explains the demand side management conceptual framework, as well as the advantages and potential hurdles for its implementation. Lastly, it identifies some key actions to facilitate the development of a demand side management culture.
