At the present, the shared governance of this reserve is in charge of the University of Costa Rica – Western headquarters and the Ministry of the Environment and energy – National system of Conservation Areas – (SINAC). Each of the two state agencies is responsible for different programs such as: Administrative and financial management, protection and control program, land tenure, research and restoration and monitoring of resources, teaching, community management, social action and environmental education.Este artículo presenta los eventos relevantes en la historia de la conservación en Costa Rica, como preámbulo a la creación de la Reserva Biológica Alberto Manuel Brenes (ReBAMB), Alajuela, Costa Rica, la cual fue creada en 1975 como reserva forestal poriniciativa del Comité pro desarrollo universitario, en San Ramón, bajo una administración tripartita. En 1991, pasa a otra categoría de manejo, zona protectora y desde 1993 es reserva biológica. Aquí se describen los principales tipos de gobernanza que existenen el manejo de las áreas protegidas. En la actualidad la gobernanza compartida de esta reserva está a cargo de la Universidad de Costa Rica – Sede de Occidente y el Ministerio del Ambiente y Energía – Sistema Nacional de Áreas de Conservación – (SINAC).
