The study included a methodology focused on bibliographic and press review and interviews with environmental defenders who faced criminal complaints for their activism against the PMC. In this case, as in other countries in the region, the criminalization and, particularly, the judicialization of the protest, has been a resource used by state and non-state actors to obstruct the work of environmental defenders. Likewise, it has been found that, in the case of the fight against the PMC, the use of the criminal complaint had a triple purpose: to delegitimize, intimidate and inhibit people who fought against mining.Este artículo discute la criminalización de la protesta social y la labor de defensa ambiental en Costa Rica, basándose en el estudio de caso de la lucha contra el Proyecto Minero Crucitas (PMC), entre los años 2008 y 2010. El estudio incluyó una metodología centrada en la consulta bibliográfica, hemerográfica y entrevistas a personas defensoras ambientales que enfrentaron denuncias penales por su labor de militancia contra el PMC. En este caso, como en otros países de la región, la criminalización, y particularmente, la judicialización de la protesta ha sido un recurso usado por los actores estatales y no-estatales como una forma de obstruir la labor de las personas defensoras ambientales.
