Summary:Schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease caused by a helminth trematode of the genus Schistosoma, which has humans as the definitive host and Biomphalaria snails as intermediate hosts. It is the second most important parasitic disease worldwide, infecting over 220 million people. The search for molluscicides derived from plant species has been highlighted as an alternative to the use of synthetic molluscicides. The aim of this study was to investigate the molluscicidal activity of Annona muricata and Jatropha elliptica on adult snails and their eggs. Ethanol extracts of Annona muricata and Jatropha elliptica bioassays showed a concentration-dependent effect with LD90 values of 68.3 and 41.1 mg/ml, respectively, on the adult snails, and DL90 27.7 and 24.0 mg/ml on their eggs. The plant species investigated in this work show molluscicidal effect and may be sources of useful compounds for the control of schistosomiasis.
