| Sumario: | In this work, we investigate meaning construction of multimodal texts by focusing on the process of recategorization under a cognitive-discursive perspective, according to Lima (2009). For that, we analyze three political cartoons related to the 2014 presidential elections in Brazil. The results point to the productivity of the referring process investigated as a mechanism that triggers the constructions of the cartoons’ comic and ironic meanings. Such a role is much more evidenced by the identification of conceptual multimodal metaphors that instantiate the occurrences of metaphoric recategorization that constitute the cartoons since they are configured in a process that mixes both verbal and imagetic semiosis. |
