Sumario:This study analyses comparatively two mitigation alternatives of Greenhouse Gases (GHGs), resulting from the landfill biogas emissions (power generation and combustion in flares), through the perspective of the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). The results demonstrated a technical and economic feasibility of both reductive measures of greenhouse gases, emphasizing the option of methane gas combustion by requiring much lower investment costs than the use of methane for electricity generation, while it earns significant revenue from the sale of carbon credits. The results are consistent with studies from the World Bank (2005) and Vanzin (2006). The contributions of these two GHGs reductive measures would bring contributions as the reduction of emissions in approximately 9.3 million tons of carbon dioxide and diversification of the national energy matrix.
