Descrição
Resumo:In contemporary European Portuguese, we know that the usual position of clitics is enclisis, while in Brazilian Portuguese and in other Romance languages it is proclisis, as in medieval Portuguese. Since this phenomenon is a factor that differentiates modern Galician and European Portuguese from other Romance languages, including Spanish, as from the American variety of Portuguese, we shall examine the most important aspects of the syntax of Portuguese clitics between the 13th and the 16th centuries, the so-called ‘archaic Portuguese’ period. The corpus we have selected and transcribed is a sample of around 150 original legal documents dating from 1289-1565, from the collection of the Cistercian monastery of Santa Maria de Alcobaça (Institute of National Archives/Torre do Tombo, Lisbon), a particularly important centre of culture in medieval Portugal.
