| Sumario: | Chapada Diamantina is a mountainous region of special interest to conservation, due to its high biodiversity. Wildfires are frequent in the region, and their effects are not well understood yet. This study aimed to quantify the aerial plant biomass in an open savanna two years after a wildfire, to assess if this time is sufficient to allow a new wildfire in the vegetation, and in the positive case, to estimate the biomass consumed by the fire. This study also aimed to characterize the family composition of vascular plants and the fuel vertical distribution. The studied open savanna is located in the APA Marimbus-Iraquara, in the surroundings of Chapada Diamantina National Park and represents enclaves of cerrado sensu lato physiognomies in the Caatinga biome. A stratified sampling was carried out in areas of open savanna without shrubs and trees (C), shrub-tree spots (AA), and open savanna with sub-shrubs (S), in 20 plots of 1m x 1m, where the percentage of cover and species height distinguished by plant families were determined. The aerial plant biomass was collected in 10 plots classified as fine (until 0.3cm diameter) and thick (more than 0.3cm diameter) fuel. After that, two areas were burned and the residual unburned biomass was collected in the other 10 plots. Analyses of variance were used for comparisons. The biomass in C was 491.6g m-2, in the S, 530g m-2, and in the AA, 1,395.3g m-2. The fine biomass was continuous, comprised mainly Poaceae species and was consumed by fire (95 to 97%), while the thick fuel, mainly formed by Fabaceae species, was not consumed, in the higher and heterogeneous shrub-tree spots. This study showed the need to include the grasslands surrounding Chapada Diamantina National Park in actions of wildfire combat and prevention, since their high flammability poses wildfire risk to the Park. |
