This legacy intertwines the material and spiritual dimensions, which cannot be understood in isolation. No religion can claim ritualistic primacy, as historical evidence reveals material aspects of settlement and worship that point to a reality beyond our immediate worldview—a reality accessible through sensory perception, intuition, and spiritual insight. While African people carried with them the memory and practices of connecting with their ancestors and deities, the establishment of Candomblé in the Americas was made possible by the presence of material elements—minerals, plants, and animals—that facilitated this connection. This underscores the significance of Candomblé’s assentamentos (ritual foundations), which extend far beyond their aesthetic value. These assentamentos are essential, as they enable practitioners to access the lives of their ancestors and orixás. Such foundations are embodied in the physical, mental, and spiritual structures of a Candomblé house, as well as in the lived religiosity of its followers.O candomblé afro-brasileiro, enquanto religião de resistência, traz como alguns de seus alicerces aspectos materiais nos assentamentos de seus ancestrais e orixás que resistem há tempos. Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo2025-03-15info:eu-repo/semantics/articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionapplication/pdfhttps://revistas.pucsp.br/index.php/rever/article/view/6679310.23925/1677-1222.2024vol24i3a11REVER: Journal for the Study of Religion; Vol. 24 No. 3 (2024): Religião Material; 169-183REVER: Revista de Estudos da Religião; v. 24 n. 3 (2024): Religião Material; 169-1831677-1222reponame:Rever (São Paulo.
