Sumario:This study was carried out aiming to evaluate different Ethephon (phosphonic acid 2cloroetil) concentrations in twelve years old ´Ponkan´ mandarin grafted on ´Rangpur´ lime, to evaluate the percentage of thinning, growth, quality and fruit production out and into market standard. The experiment was conducted from January to July 2009 in an orchard not irrigated in Perdões, southern Minas Gerais. The type climate is Cwb, according to the Köppen classification, characterized with hot, humid summers and dry winters and cold. There were tested five concentrations of Ethephon: 0, 200, 400, 600 and 800 mg L-1, applied when the fruit was at the development stage of 25 to 30 mm in transverse diameter. The experimental design was a randomized block design with four replications. Each plot was constituted by four plants. There were obtained percentage of 28.5% thinning in plants treated with 800 mg L-1 Ethephon concentration. Due intense leaf abscission observed in plants treated with 800 mg L-1 Ethephon concentration, the concentration of 600 mg L-1 of Ethephon was the most suitable to promote ´Ponkan´ mandarin thinning under the conditions studied, allowing the development of uniform size fruit. The chemical thinning promoted by Ethephon application increased the quality of ´Ponkan´ mandarin.
