By means of data analysis from these five periods, it was possible to identify internal factors of the adjacency/non-adjacency, class of verbs, verbal tense, verbal mode and grammatical person that bear the relationship of infinitive complementation in Portuguese. To accomplish the task, first we started investigating from the present period to the past period, returning afterwards to the present period like Labov (1972c) and making use of the software WordSmith Tools to analyse the data quantitatively. The description of the variable infinitive behaviour and their conditioning factors in each of the analysed synchrony was made. We verified that the phenomenon occurs in all phases of Portuguese language. This phenomenon is more recurrent in archaic phase, which is justified by the high rate of rupturing elements that are presented there. Diachronically we verified that [de+infinitive]~[o+infinitive] is stable, and throughout Portuguese history it is conditioned by a specific structural context, adjacency/nonadjacency, as well as by a certain class of verbs, here labelled as modal transitive verbs. We also observed that the number of regent verbs as well as prepositional infinitive structures decrease throughout time, but they do not disappear.

We also observed that the number of regent verbs as well as prepositional infinitive structures decrease throughout time, but they do not disappear.Trabalho de natureza sincrônica e diacrônica que tem por objetivo descrever e caracterizar a variação do complemento [de+infinitivo]~[o+infinitivo] em cinco períodos da língua portuguesa, a saber, português arcaico, português clássico, português setecentista, português oitocentista e português moderno contemporâneo. Através da análise dos dados coletados desses cinco períodos foi possível identificar os fatores internos da adjacência/não-adjacência, classe de verbos, tempo verbal, modo verbal e pessoa gramatical que estão imbricados na relação da complementação infínitiva em português. Para realizar tal tarefa partiu-se do presente para o passado, retornando depois ao presente à maneira de Labov (1972c) e utilizando para análise quantitativa dos dados o Programa "WordSmith Tools". Descreveu-se o comportamento infinitivo variável e seus fatores condicionantes em cada uma das sincronias analisadas. Verificou-se que o fenômeno ocorre em todas as fases da língua portuguesa, sendo mais recorrente na fase arcaica. Uma das razões aventadas para essa alta ocorrência é o elevado índice de elementos ruptores que aí se apresentam. Diacronicamente verificou-se que [de+infinitivo]~[o+infinitivo] é estável, e ao longo da história do português está condicionado por um contexto estrutural específico, adjacência/não-adjacência, bem como por uma determinada classe de verbos, aqui rotulados de verbos transtivos-modais.
