Sumario:The use of cooled semen is anoption for clinical practice, since it’s a practical and inexpensive method, which allows a god preservation of fertility. However, spermatozoa stored under refrigeration conditions become aged, losing fertilizing capacity. The addition of antioxidant molecules tocooling extenders could reduce oxidative stress during storage improving semen quality. The goal of this study was to analyze the effects of the addition of catalaseand vitamin C over the quality of refrigerated semen. Semen from five dogs aging between 2 to 5 years and five with more than 7 years was used. After collection the ejaculates were divided into three samples, one diluted in the cooling extender (control without antioxidant), another diluted in the extender with vitaminC, and the last with extender with catalase. Before and after cooling all samples were analyzed by Computer Assisted Semen Analysis (CASA), sperm morphology and analysis of the plasmatic and acrosomal membrane integrity. In this study the only variable that has benefited from the action of antioxidants was the acrosome integrity in cooled samples obtained from aged animals. In addition, in this same group the concentration of catalase used seems to have had a deleterious effect on sperm motility parameters. These results provide additional evidence of individual variations in response to cooling suggesting the need for a larger number of studies involving experimental animals of different ages.
