Resumo:Lip fillers are a highly sought-after procedure to restore lost contour and volume and to reshape specific points of the upper and lower lips. The aim of this study was to conduct a narrative review of the literature on possible complications in lip fillers using hyaluronic acid. Complete articles were searched for and evaluated according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The keywords used were: “Hyaluronic Acid”, “Lip”, “Dermal Fillers”. The main complications related to lip fillers include bruising caused by a needle puncture of the vessel, which disappears in 5 to 10 days; edema, which can be avoided by minimizing the number of punctures and applying ice after the procedure; persistent erythema lasting for a few hours up to 1 to 2 days; infections; reactivation of oral herpes simplex; necrosis resulting from embolization of the product in the lumen of the labial artery, which can be avoided by using thicker microcannulas larger than 25 G; nodules and granulomas. It is extremely important for the professional to have knowledge of the anatomy of the face, since the position of the arteries is unfavorable to current volumization techniques and the convex shape of the lips. Lip contouring, when performed on a superficial plane, on the skin, mucosa, or at their junction, causes few complications. This literature review showed that one of the main factors that can lead to clinical complications during lip filling is the clinician's insufficient experience and lack of knowledge of facial anatomy. The use of hyaluronic acid should not negate the need for qualified dental professionals who work with these procedures. The application technique requires extensive anatomical knowledge in order to reduce vascular complications and other occurrences.
