Resumo:Cowpea is a subsistence crop and plays a fundamental role in the context socioeconomic status for farming families living in the North and Northeast. Our objective was to study the effect of seed molybdenum (Mo) content on nutrition nitrogen and cowpea grain productivity in cohesive soils with low fertility native to Maranhão. The seeds of the Guariba cultivar with three Mo contents were produced in the Zona da Mata of Minas Gerais, in Coimbra-MG. With the seeds collected from the first harvest, an experiment was set up in São Luís-MA under the scheme 3 x 2 factorial: seed Mo content (0.014 ± 0.005; 0.674 ± 0.151 and 1.987 ± 0.278 µg Mo seed-1) and N doses (0 and 60 kg ha-1). Half of the dose of 60 kg ha-1 was applied in the planting furrow and the other half was applied as cover 15 days after planting. emergency (DAE). A randomized block design was used, with four replications. The application of N did not influence grain productivity. With N, the contents of Mo of the seed did not influence grain productivity and N content in the leaf. Without N, the grain productivity and N content in leaves obtained from plants originating from seeds with 1.987 ± 0.278 µg seed-1 was 69% and 13% larger than plants originating from seeds with a content of 0.014 ± 0.005 µg seed-1. Our results suggest that seeds rich in Mo increase grain productivity and nitrogen nutrition of the cowpea in cohesive soils with low natural fertility in Maranhão and do not require nitrogen fertilizer
