Sumario:To describe the role of nursing in facing the COVID-19 pandemic in an urgency and emergency unit in the city of Belém- Pará. Methods: Descriptive field research, carried out in an Emergency Care Unit (UPA), located in the city of Belém-Pará. 19 nurses from the morning, afternoon and night shifts participated in the research, being 13 women and six men. Data collection was carried out through semi-structured interviews and content analysis was performed qualitatively. Results: Four thematic categories emerged from the data: nurses on the front line of the covid-19 pandemic in an emergency care unit in Belém-Pará; the role of nursing in the front line in the fight against covid-19; the valuation of nursing in the pandemic and the role of social media: hero or slave? Challenges for nurses on the front lines of the covid-19 pandemic, through which the results were described. Final considerations: The present study evidenced nursing care as the basis for nurses' protagonism in the front line of patient care with COVID-19.
