Descripción
Sumario:This article analyzes evidential particles in Asuriní of Xingu, a Tupí-Guaraní language spoken by the Asuriní people who live in the municipality of Altamira, State of Pará, Brazil. The data reveal that the speakers of that language, when transmitting information, can present it as coming from a direct or indirect source. They use a set of particles to indicate how they relate to the source of the information: attesting, reporting, or simply inferring. This work follows the theoretical assumptions of typology and linguistic functionalism. The data, collected in loco by the author, come from mythical narratives, narratives of personal experience, conversations in a natural context, and elicitations. They were analyzed with regard to form, function, and meaning in speech. The results show that the particles: aka, raka, vi, ra'uva, aipa and nipa function as an important category in the expression of evidentiality in the language, being widely used in speech when the speaker wants to emphasize the source of the information.
