| Sumario: | This paper discusses recent expansion of foreign banking institutions in the Brazilian financial system. The main issues examined are: the external and domestic determinants of such expansion; the means by which foreign banks are expanding their presence (acquisitions or creation of new institutions); the characteristics of the newcomers; and the competitive strategies and restructuring programs of the Brazilian private banks. The paper's conclusions deal with trends and perspectives for the Brazilian financial system. |
