| Resumo: | This paper explores the relationship between Cultural History and Art, emphasising the perspectives of Aby Warburg and Walter Benjamin. Initially, it provides an overview of Cultural History as a field of knowledge from the 19th century onwards, demonstrating the theoretical influences on Warburg and Benjamin from figures such as Jacob Burckhardt, Heinrich Wölfflin, and Aloïs Riegl. It then examines how the main concepts of Warburg and Benjamin complement and contrast with each other. The text highlights Walter Benjamin’s conception of Cultural History, portraying it as a field of struggle and rupture, where Art is profoundly affected by technology and mass culture. This vision disrupts present conceptual frameworks, opening up new possibilities for the future by confronting the fragmentation and incompleteness of the past. Thus, Benjamin’s conception challenges and expands the boundaries of traditional Cultural History, proving vital for understanding contemporary reality. |
