Resumo:This study aimed to understand aspects of the mental health of migrants and refugees in Brazil. Bibliographic research was carried out, reviewing publications from 2013 to 2020. The results showed that psychological suffering is intensified by the involuntary and sudden character of displacement. That happens because the refugees carry with them little of what configured their identity, and departures are often related to the sufferings connected with the pre-migratory period. Such experiences involve triggering factors for symptoms of depression and post-traumatic stress, but It shuld be take care with the “pathologization” and medicalization of trauma. It was concluded that the mental health of migrants and refugees is a public health issue, requiring further research and training of health professionals to provide care.
