| Resumo: | My objective, in this work, is to analyze the process of evaluation and selection of the English Language Coursebook, approved in the PNLD 2017, and to problematize some conditions of its use by public school teachers of 4 cities in the State of Rio de Janeiro. Studies in the field of teaching materials always point to the socio-pedagogical value that coursebooks have achieved in Additional Language classrooms (TILIO, 2006; DIAS, 2009; RAMOS, 2009; TOMLINSOM, 2011; SILVA, 2013). Thus, 9 public school teachers participated in the research, through 2 instruments: questionnaire and interview. Therefore, I was able to conclude that evaluating and selecting a coursebook is not a simple task, just as the option for (non-)use of the coursebook is not consensual among the participants. Such results take into account the diverse context of language classes and also the professional choices of each teacher. Therefore, I emphasize the importance of University Institutions to include in their curriculum subjects that deal with the evaluation and selection process of coursebooks and that teachers follow academic productions in the area and carry out their own researches, contributing to the production and circulation of knowledge, so that there is a refinement of the perception of the act of evaluating coursebooks.
