Resumo:This paper addresses the relationship between socioeconomic inequality and incarceration policy in Brazil, having as research problem the following question: to what extent does the existing socioeconomic inequality in Brazil determine to the increase of the prison population? The hypothesis defended is that Brazilian socioeconomic inequality determines and concurs to the increase of the prison population, because the penal system applies selectively the policy of repression and incarceration. The objective is to demonstrate that this selectivity results in the continuous increase of the prison population and that this model is unsustainable, from the perspective of the scarcity of resources for maintenance and construction of prisons. The paper adopts as theoretical framework the studies of Juarez Cirino dos Santos and Edwin Sutherland, in the line of research of Criminology. The research method used is hypothetical deductive, with bibliographic and documentary review, data collection on the Brazilian prison disclosed by official agencies and secondary sources. The results indicate that it is necessary to reduce the number of prisoners, either by expanding the strategies of decarceration or by reformulating the guarantee court, as well as promoting crime prevention strategies through risk and conjuncture assessment, investing in social policies to reduce crime.
