Sumario:The Brazilian Northeast (NEB) presents irregular thermopluviometric characteristics in terms of frequency, intensity, and spatial and temporal distribution. Understanding this behavior is pertinent to the development of improved strategies for coexisting with the regional climate. This study analyzes the spatiotemporal climatic variability in the Northeast region of Brazil. The analysis compares two historical series (1961–1990 and 1981–2010) of annual data on precipitation and average, maximum, and minimum temperatures from 71 meteorological stations of the National Institute of Meteorology. The climatological normal selected to represent the most recent period (1981–2010) is justified by the widespread lack of data in the latest time series (1991–2020), which would render spatial analysis of the Northeast region unfeasible. Descriptive statistics, separatrices, graphs, and maps were employed to identify and compare patterns in the data. The results indicated changes between the analyzed periods, with an 8% reduction in the average total precipitation in the NEB, especially in the south-central and western areas of Bahia, with decreases of 19%, 15%, and 11% in the states of Sergipe, Bahia, and Piauí, respectively. The average temperature increased by approximately 1°C across the entire region, with notable rises in Maranhão and parts of Piauí and Ceará. The minimum temperature exhibited a higher percentage increase (2.91%) and a reduction in amplitude, suggesting greater predictability and decreased variability relative to the mean. Despite the overlap of years from the 1980s in both series, which tends to moderate the signals of climate change, alterations in climate patterns over time were observed. The findings suggest a general increase in temperature and a reduction in precipitation across the NEB over the analyzed periods.
