Resumo:Cryptosporidium and Giardia monitoring is recommended by the Brazilian Regulation 518/2004-MS, as they can cause diarrheal disease through water transmission. The occurrence of oocysts and cysts was investigated, and the physicochemical and microbiological quality were assessed. The correlation between the physicochemical parameters and the bacteriological indicators with the presence of these parasites was performed in water samples collected from five municipalities of Bauru –DRS VI. For detecting the protozoa, the USEPA 1623 methodology was employed. Microbiological analysis was based on the Standard Methods of the Examination of Water and Wastewater, and photometric, turbidimetric, potentiometric and colorimetric methodologies were used for physicochemical analysis. Giardia cysts were found in 10% of samples, and Cryptosporidium oocyts were not detected. All treated water samples were approved in the microbiological analysis, and 66% of the raw water were in discordance with regulation. Regarding to color, 20% of the raw water samples were in discordance with regulation, and 40% of the treated water showed turbidity above that safe limit for removing protozoa. The occurrence of Giardia cysts showed the importance in monitoring the drinking water, and no correlation was found between the presence of cysts and the other parameters evaluated in this study.
