Description
Summary:Considering the distinction observed by De Mauro (1967) between matter and object, in the General Linguistics Course, in this study we investigated the status of these terms in sources of the posthumous edition: notes by Ferdinand de Saussure’s students and his handwritten notes. Our analysis contributed to highlight the pertinence of the linguist's task in understanding what Saussure establishes as the matter and object of Linguistics. This is because, in addition to being an intermediary between matter and the object, the task of the linguist, in the Saussurian view, is the very condition of existence of the object in Linguistics.
