Sumario:The channel width can be affected by changes in the hydrological regime or by anthropic interventions. Debris and mud flows can result in channel silting, expanding its width, as exemplified in the process on the plains of the Jacareí River in 2011 (Paraná Coast). In this paper, we analyze changes in the width of the Jacareí River channel resulting from the silting up induced by an extreme event and also by the subsequent anthropic interventions. A methodological guide is proposed for comparative measurement of the width in GIS. The Jacareí River had significant changes in width in the analyzed period, divided in two stretches. In the stretch widened by silting up, there was a process of returning to equilibrium conditions before the system was disturbed by the 2011 event. In the stretch of the channel affected by anthropic interventions, the widths remained stable, probably due to the characteristics of the work carried out (opening and de-silting).
