Sumario:We try in this study to analyze how the debates on the abolition and slavery appeared in the Gazeta de Notícias newspaper. We begin this analysis in 1887 to the establishment of the Golden law on 13 May 1888. The aim is to understand the newspaper's employees of opinions with regard to the discussions on the abolition, these writers debated, interpreted and diffused their ideas in this journal about such matters. Among these writers highlight Machado de Assis and chronicles the series “Good morning!”, published between 1888 and 1889 that discussed the issues related to abolition. Our goal with this analysis is to understand the Machado de Assis positioning, questions, ideas, opinions, disagreements about the various meanings o abolition and the main events that guide the late nineteenth century.
