Resumo:During the first half of the Eighteenth century Sebastião da Rocha Pita updates part of the preparatory exercises (progymnasmata) in the História da América Portuguesa (1730), through the “Oração do Acadêmico Vago (…)” (1724) and the Tratado Político (1715). One shows the way the scholar mobilizes the paraphrase and the exercise to elaborate through exempla the texts' argumentation. In the three speeches, Rocha Pita restates the theological-political subjects that created the ancient Portuguese State. The hypothesis is that the different uses of paraphrase in the different interlocutions of genres (history, oratory, treatise) are crucial to understand Rocha Pita’s performative practices. Therefore we have the same political topoi Catholically moralized, though imitated in different ways, for different readers/listeners.
