| Resumo: | This proposition involves a study about the procedures on preservation and conservation of exsiccates in herbaria, focused on the critical points that are susceptible to the contamination by deleterious agents, mainly xylophages insects. The methods of plague controlling, principally chemical control by the use of repellents, fungicides and preventing agents were compiled from the literature. In parallel, a driven questionnaire was elaborated and applied to six herbaria’s curators, with the aim of verifying the main procedures ordinarily utilized in the distinct pathways - from the collection to the diverse stages of exsiccate preparing to its proper insertion in the plant collection. A chart diagram showing the whole sequence of activities involved in the management of the botanical was built, and the critical points of such a process, specifically those related to the necessity of desinfestation, were pointed out, in order to call the attention to the specific care needed therein. The main desinfestation practices employed consist in the utilization of routine chemical repellents (naphthalene, camphor, benzene and others), preventing procedures (previous freezing or opportunistic isolation of the botanical material), and the periodic chemical fumigation using phosphine-based products or occasional DDT application. One may conclude that consistently and rigorously procedure conduction - seen as quality parameters in the administrative processes - are fundamental in order to preserve and conserve the plant collection; and therefore to the quality in the herbaria management processes. Such an aptitude minimizes those deleterious effects to the herbaria staff health caused by the periodic fumigation. On the other hand, the adequate flow of procedures contributes also to lower the desinfestation costs. So, the present study comes out to strongly advising on the adoption of adequate process as effective quality tools to aid the herbaria management, suggesting the adoption of standardized procedures as a tool for conserving the plant collection. |
