Sumario:Yacon (Smallanthus sonchifolius) is a native plant from the Andes belonging to the Asteraceae family. Its tubers and leaves are consumed mainly for the control of hyperglycemia. In addition, the glandular trichomes present in the leaves are rich in sesquiterpene lactones such as enyndrine, uvedalina and sonchifolin, which present antimicrobial activity against different strains of fungi and gram-positive bacteria. The antimicrobial activity of the sesquiterpene lactones extracted from leaves was evaluated against Candida albicans, Candida tropicalis, Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella enterica Typhimurium by the disc diffusion method. Results show antimicrobial activity only against S. aureus. Minimum inhibitory concentration against S. aureus, calculated after the microdilution method, was 0.09 mg/ml. Results confirm the antimicrobial activity of sesquiterpene lactones against gram-positive bacteria.
