There are not many data regarding the effects of VAC available in PMS syndromes and other female conditions. Hence, this bibliographical review has aimed to search for an enhanced insight about the action mechanism of extracts of the fruits of VAC, its clinical effectiveness and pharmacological effects besides the action relief of severe symptoms of Premenstrual Syndrome, primarily in hyperprolactenemia and mastodynia, including the menopause itself and the luteal phase disorders. Therefore, we have verified a greater amount of studies related to the usage and effectiveness of the extract of the chaste tree regarding the relief in cyclical mastodynia and hyperprolactemia of PMS, which it has proven its valid endurance and inhibition against mild pain by dopaminergic principles of VAC.O extrato seco da fruta Vitex agnus-castus (VAC) é popularmente usado no tratamento de sintomas pré-menstruais como mastodinia cíclica e hiperprolactinemia, e outros sintomas somáticos e físicos da Síndrome Pré-Menstrual (PMS), além de também haver relatos sobre seu uso em deficiências da fase lútea do ciclo menstrual e nos sintomas da menopausa. Poucas informações estão disponíveis a respeito da ação do VAC nos distúrbios da PMS e em outras condições femininas. Portanto, este levantamento bibliográfico tem como objetivo buscar melhores esclarecimentos quanto ao mecanismo de ação do extrato da planta VAC, sua eficácia clínica e efeitos farmacológicos, sua ação no alívio dos sintomas da PMS, principalmente da mastodinia e hiperprolactinemia, nos defeitos da fase lútea e na menopausa. Como resultado, verificamos maior número de estudos sobre a utilização e eficácia da planta no alívio de sintomas da mastodinia cíclica e hiperprolactinemia da PMS, que comprovaram boa tolerância e inibição das dores moderadas pelos agentes dopaminérgicos do VAC.
