Sumario:This article is part of a more extensive study investigating slavery in the cocoa economy of Ilhéus, southern Bahia, between 1850 and 1888. In this case study, we analyze the importance of cane brandy (cachaça) based on the Municipal House Tax Collection Book, which covers the period from 1870 to 1878. The complementary sources used are post-mortem inventories:  Journal of Notary Acts, Slave Classification Book to be released by the emancipation fund, and the General Census of the Empire of Brazil of 1872. The investigations concentrate mainly on the volume of exports, taxes collected by the Chamber, slave labor and on the agents involved in the business.
