Sumario:Aquifer contamination in areas near by cemeteries are a common reality in many parts of Brazil e worldwide. This study analyzed levels of microbiologic contamination found in samples of the free aquifer located at the cemetery Bom Jardim in Fortaleza – CE. It was investigated if this contamination was related to the presence of the cemetery. According to the methodology proposed, which took into account the survival time of the microorganisms pathogens which causes illnesses and the primary process of movement was advective, it was possible to conclude that the source of groundwater contamination was not the cemetery. This study confirmed our initial assumption that the main cause of groundwater contamination is the lack of a sanitary sewage system in the area
