Sumario:This paper analyses a previous translation and proposes two retranslations of a text written by Leonardo da Vinci. The text is an introduction to some work (possibly a book on anatomy) that nevertheless was not finished. Firstly, based on Berman‘s (1995; 2013) ideas about the translation an translation criticism, I analyse a translation made in 1997. Secondly, I propose a retranslation that tries to unify a literal bias (VINAY &DARBELNET, 1972) and a concept of translation that accounts for the rhythm (MESCHONNIC, 2010). Finally, being the rhythm the guiding aspect of the entire exercise, I propose a third translation of Leonardo‘s text, aiming at an equilibrium between literality and a better adequacy to the contemporary Brazilian Portuguese, in which nonetheless the ancient Italian could be recognized, but with no excess of strangeness.
