It will be concluded that, in "The Story of the Man of Pinguelo", the knowledge of otherness leads to the conquest of identity, and, from this knowledge, the designs already determined by destiny can be better realized. Therefore, the link between the tale and the tragic will be achieved.Objetiva-se apresentar leitura do conto "A Estória do Homem do Pinguelo", de Guimarães Rosa. Trabalhar-se-á o papel da alteridade na constituição da identidade, seja no que diz respeito aos narradores presentes no conto, seja no que diz respeito às personagens. Concluir-se-á que, em "A Estória do Homem do Pinguelo", o conhecimento da alteridade conduz à conquista da identidade, podendo, a partir deste conhecimento, melhor efetivarem-se os desígnios já determinados pelo destino.
