| Summary: | The article revisits a classic work of historical and sociological thought from Rio Grande do Sul, A Formação do Rio Grande do Sul, from 1927, by Jorge Salis Goulart, an influential intellectual from Rio Grande do Sul who, with this work, offers an important paradigm for the interpretation of the formation of southern society, and contributes to an ideological construction that continues today on a whitened representation of Rio Grande do Sul. The focus is to demonstrate how the work introduces, for the first time, a racialized reading of Rio Grande do Sul, reproducing, in that context, the contemporary debate on race. At the same time, we seek to demonstrate how these interpretations were strongly ideological and, ultimately, distorted empirical reality, contributing to exerting symbolic violence regarding the representation of black people in Rio Grande do Sul society. |
