Descripción
Sumario:This article examines how the 1957 influenza epidemic, known as the Asian flu, was linked to one of the most prominent ministries in the newly established government of Juscelino Kubitschek: the ministry of Finance. Drawing on analyses of Brazilian newspapers, official reports, scientific theses published during the epidemic, and a review of relevant historiography on epidemics, we argue that the pandemic was framed in specific ways by social and political processes connected to Brazil’s developmental agenda in the 1950s. Reconstructing the history of the 1957 epidemic offers a means of broadening the historical understanding of this period in Brazil, which is often interpreted primarily through the political and economic lens of development.
