Descripción
Sumario:This article describes the impacts on the land structure, property regimes and crop production before and after the agrarian reform in the Brejo region of Paraíba, which, in the early nineties, underwent major social transformations as a result of the failure of the Plant Santa Maria. Owner of about five thousand hectares, which, through the struggle for agrarian reform, were reconverted into ten rural settlements. In order to do so, we rely on several research sources that complement each other, in particular, on testimonies collected via field research in the region and on certificates of acquired and/or leased properties that are under the custody of the DocumentalCollection of Usina Santa Maria in the central archive of the Federal University of Paraíba (UFPB). The results show that the transformation of the sugarcane plantation area (business land) into settlements (work land) generated impacts from the land structure of the municipalities as well as the food conditions of the population.
