However, concerning the expansion volume, works of correlation between performance to families and in crossings were not found. Therefore, the objective of this work was to analyze the association of performance between S3 families of the population of Beija-Flor popcorn and its respective hybrids topcross, considering yield and expansion volume. It was used a population of Viçosa popcorn as bequeather. The correlations between S3 families and its hybrids was low. They varied from 0.09 to 0.17 for yield and from 0.34 to 0.58 for expansion volume. Ambient differences must have been the main causes for the low correlations. However, not additive genetic factors also must have been of high importance. The high correlations found for expansion volume in relation to the ones found for yield was cause, mainly, by the fact that expansion volume be a character less influenced by the environment and not by additive factors.O topcross é utilizado no melhoramento do milho, principalmente para prever o comportamento de famílias endogâmicas em cruzamento, descartando aquelas de desempenho inferior. Isso é feito porque o comportamento per si de famílias endogâmicas não é um bom preditor de seu comportamento em cruzamento. Este fato é evidenciado por diversos trabalhos onde foram encontradas baixas correlações entre desempenho per si e em cruzamento para alguns caracteres. Porém, quanto à capacidade de expansão, não se encontram trabalhos de correlação entre desempenho per si e em cruzamento. Portanto, objetivou-se analisar a associação de desempenho entre famílias S3 da população de milho-pipoca Beija-Flor e seus respectivos híbridos topcross, considerando rendimento de grãos e capacidade de expansão. Utilizou-se a população de milho-pipoca Viçosa como testador. As correlações entre famílias S3 e seus híbridos foram baixas. Variaram de 0,09 a 0,17 para rendimento de grãos e de 0,34 a 0,58 para capacidade de expansão. Diferenças ambientais e fatores genéticos não aditivos foram as principais causas das baixas correlações.
