Resumo:The determination of recharge rates is essential for the sustainable management of aquifers. Operating a lysimeter and applying theoretical flow concepts, the potential infiltration rate at São Carlos region could be estimated. The lysimeter was filled with sandy soil from the Guarani Aquifer outcrop zone. Soil moisture in the lysimeter and in the natural soil was monitored. Infiltration data were collected for the period between January and December 2002. The potential direct infiltration rate for the study period was estimated as 55.6% of the precipitation. Analyses of the moisture behavior in the soil have shown that aquifer recharge can occur only in the rainy period (November to March). This work allowed also to conclude that theoretical models for evapotranspiration estimation are not suited for regions characterized by rainy and dry periods.
