| Sumario: | A knowledge-based society is the plaintiff of infocommunicational competencies such as critical towards content and sources and the ability to relate to individuals who may be physically and culturally distant. With a view to contributing to the definition of the concept of Media and Information Literacy (MIL) in contemporary times were extended the observation lenses to include these competencies, especially in the aspect of communication as well as two approaches that can bring an effective contribution: the new media literacy and the metaliteracy. The objectives of this article can be summarized into three: 1) to highlight the insertion of competence in communication within the scope of Media and Information Literacy (MIL); 2) present the constituent elements of infocommunicational competencies; 3) demonstrate the relevance of metaliteracy to advance in the understanding of the competencies required to participate socially. Under the methodological point of view, this is a theoretical discussion that seeks to advance in the definition and elements of the concept of MIL. It is concluded that while the skills inherent in MIL remain fundamental, new competences linked to a more participatory environment in the production and sharing of information have emerged |
