Descripción
Sumario:Side by side with the specificities of the essay genre, we discuss the approximations and possible contrasts between the essayistic practice and the literary criticism of Antonio Candido and Mário de Andrade. We argue that some essential characteristics of the essay are present in important productions of the authors and that they go beyond the simple insertion of aesthetic resources of language to the procedures of critical analysis. We seek to show that the essayistic character of Antonio Candido's literary criticism, especially, comes from an extensive and winding tradition that, in Brazil, begins to gain strength in romanticism and is consolidated in modernism, with a prominent place for the production of one of his works greatest intellectuals: the poet and also literary critic Mário de Andrade.
