Sumario:Introduction: Eating behavior is formed by a set of actions related to food, from choice to ingestion, determined by social aspects, demographic, economic, cultural, psychological, acquired by information received from the environment and previous experiences. The influence of the media affects behavior and thinking in order to induce eating patterns, producing models of lifestyles that people start to follow. Objectives: To assess whether the use of media and social networks has an impact on the eating behavior of university students at a university in Rio Grande do Sul. Material and methods: Quantitative cross-sectional study, applied questionnaire through a virtual form on the degree of confidence of university students in social networks and the impact on their food choices. Sample: 227 university students enrolled in a community institution. Data tabulated in a spreadsheet using Excel® software and submitted to descriptive statistical analysis. Results: The influence on food choices was significantly associated with the age group of 21 to 30 years (p=0,030) and the Degree courses (p=0,000). The prevalence of users following digital influencer profiles was significantly associated with the age group from 18 to 25 years old (p=0,923). Courses in the Management/Business area were significantly more affected by the influence of the media in relation to perception and relationship with the body compared to the rest of the sample (p=0.000). Conclusion: University students had a diverse perception of the reliability of social networks and it was found that the media exerted a constant influence on eating patterns and body perception.
